課程概述

This course is premised on the belief that our writing ability comes, for the most part, from our reading experience. As the authors of The Writer’s Response (the required text of this class) put it, “it is nearly impossible to write well without reading well.” We will pay as much attention to the writing skills demonstrated in the readings as their “contents.” The task of writing in this class is not only to come up with ideas or subject matters to write about, but also to enhance your writing skills and your overall ability in written English to express those ideas or contents in a more satisfactory and sophisticated way. With the emphasis on reading and writing capabilities in mind, the teacher will run the classes as workshops for intensive training in reading and writing. Students will be asked to practice their writings virtually in every meeting and will also be encouraged to explore the more refined and creative use of language in their own writings.

課程目標
The objective of this course is to help the students become more effective writers in English. To this end we will, in this class, familiarize students with formal, but not difficult, writings in English, build their vocabulary via the reading materials, and develop their sensibility toward the English language and ability of critical thinking, which is necessary for the academic success of English majors.
課程要求
Your final grade will be calculated according to the following breakdown:
1) Participation (20%): Participation begins with attendance. Every student is expected to actively take part in the discussions and writing exercises, which we’ll do every time we meet. Missing classes therefore will definitely affect this portion of your grade; it will affect your overall grade as well because in-class writings cannot be made up after class.
2) In-class Writings and Homework (20%): Please note that many in-class writing exercises assume—and depend on—your having read the assigned materials. In-class writings are due at the end of the class. Late versions of them are not acceptable.
3) Major Assignments (60%): In this course you will be asked to write three formal essays. Papers are due at the beginning of class the day due. Late papers are subject to having their grades reduced (typically 1/3 grade for each day late). Absence from class on the date due does not excuse the lateness of your assignment. Allow plenty of time for printing your essays in the computer lab, and/or keep an extra printer ink cartridge handy at home.
All papers handed in are to be typed/word-processed. The teacher will not grade papers which are hand-written, and the assignment will accrue penalties until it satisfies this requirement. Papers which are more than one week late will receive an F.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is using another person’s words and ideas as though they were your own. It is easy to avoid plagiarism: simply put the material you have take from someone else’s writing in quotation marks and cite the person’s name and publication in your paper. Plagiarism is a serious offense which will result in expulsion from the University. A paper which contains any plagiarized material at all will receive an F. Any such plagiarized paper will result in the student’s receiving an F for this course. Please note that plagiarism is not restricted to the use of published work; the passing of another student’s work as your own is also a case of plagiarism.
